Week 6 Office Hours: The Things They Carried (Wednesday, May 6, 11:00-12:00) Come to a Google Hangout to get help understanding the writing assignment for the week, to get feedback on something you’ve written, or to discuss your ideas with Lori and some classmates!
Week 6: Written Response (DUE: Friday, May 8 by 8:30 am)
Writing Brainstorm- Make some lists (see online seminar document for where to put this) Choose either yourself or someone you know really, really well to focus on. What do you/they carry that are both literal (actual physical objects) and symbolic (objects that represent something out, or things that are invisible/intangible)?
Written Response: Personal Narrative/Short Fiction Write 250-500 words about the things you carry, OR about someone you know really, really well. The goal here is to illuminate and show who your subject is in a symbolic way. Again, play with literary devices, take some risks in your writing. Look at how O’Brien alternates paragraphs that are mostly lists with these very brief stories, and play with that structure if it works for you.
